Along with Mr Bob Stevens (27 June), I too was surprised to hear from Coun Dorothy Clegg that there were, so far, no objections to the proposed plans to build a hotel on the West Cliff.
Over recent months the council has been pursuing a park and ride facility for the town as parking is so much of a problem.

I think anyone would agree this is not ‘joined-up thinking’ when in the next moment there’s talk about building on the main car park in the West Cliff area.

On the subject of the number of visitors to the town dropping – while recently chatting to a senior member of the clergy at Derby Cathedral, during coffee after a service, the subject of Whitby came up.

He mentioned he understood it was a lovely place but that he had tried to visit twice in the past, when in the area, but had been unable to find anywhere to park on either occasion, so had moved on.

I wonder how many other potential visitors to the town already see it in this way during high season?

And the guests at this new hotel will be parking where exactly?

Maybe fighting with me for the spot outside my home.

Simon Mann, Crescent Avenue, Whitby
