Why no clear up?

Having read of the efforts to clean up the area where the lobster pots are kept, I was struck by comments made by the deputy harbourmaster.
He selflessly claimed that ‘some of the stuff had been there for years’.

If this is indeed the case then perhaps questions should be asked about why it was not cleared up long before the town council stepped in?

As a town built around the maritime industry, there is every reason for a bit of discarded material, but there is no justification for allowing material to fester for years.

I presume the harbour office has it own employees, and if so, why have they not been charged with keeping the area in question tidy, especially if we are to believe that like many other ports the fishing trade is in sad decline.

Moreso when one considers the town bids each year to be crowned Whitby in Bloom.
