BUSKING sessions at a Staithes pub have raised a generous amount of money in memory of an old regular.
The Captain Cook Inn has presented St Catherine’s Hospice with a cheque for just over £824.

On the first Sunday of every month, the Captain Cook Inn provides an open house for buskers, which is open to all members of the public and where anyone playing acoustically can take part.

Fund-raisers including raffles and tombolas are held during the day, where all money raised is added to a collective fund which is counted up at the end of each year.

The efforts are in aid of regular customer Neil Dryden, who often played guitar before the busking sessions began.

Landlord, Trevor Readman said: “Neil had always said that if we were ever to do anything for charity, he’d like the money to go to St Catherine’s Hospice, who looked after his mother in the final years leading up to her death.

“He often played his guitar for us on a Sunday afternoon, and when he passed away and the open house for buskers started, we knew we had to give the money to St Catherine’s Hospice.”

The Captain Cook Inn regularly plays host to singer Claire Walton, who is accompanied by a jazz band.

And CDs of their music have been produced and a percentage of each one is donated to St Catherine’s Hospice.

Cash raised from the donation of a football signed by the players of Middlesbrough Football Club was also added to the total after it was raffled off.

Mr Readman added: “We’d like to thank Middlesbrough Football Club for that because it helped raise even more money for the hospice. They deserve a mention.”

Money raised over the course of the year has also been donated to July’s Staithes Music Festival.
