STAITHES lifeboat searched for a party of three adults and 24 schoolchildren who were late returning from a coast walk.
The volunteer lifeboat crew held an open day at the boathouse on Saturday to celebrate 30 years since the station re-opened when a man said the party had not arrived at Port Mulgrave from Staithes as expected.
The lifeboat searched close inshore but did not see anyone along the stretch of coastline and set off back to Staithes.
But they then spotted a large group of people on one of the clifftop paths. Mobile coastguards from Staithes and Skinningrove were sent to meet the people, who were confirmed as the missing party.
Lee Jackson, press officer with Staithes lifeboat, said: "We believe they were late arriving because they stopped to help an injured walker who was taken by air ambulance to hospital."
