Schoolchildren have been stretching their legs on nearby sections of the Cleveland Way National Trail this summer.
Youngsters from Oakridge School in Hinderwell walked from Staithes to Runswick Bay last month as part of a project to increase the children’s awareness and understanding of the 109 mile trail and the North York Moors National Park.

Staff from the park’s education team walked with the children and pointed out key features in the landscape along the way.

There were also activities and games en route to teach the pupils about the geology, cultural and social history of the area and how the land is managed today.

Fylingdales Primary School are set to take part in the project on 19 June.

Malcolm Hodgson, National Trails Officer for the Cleveland Way and the Yorkshire Wolds Way, said: “Although some people choose to do the Cleveland Way in one, there are lots of curiosities and interesting things to see along the entire length that means it is equally as good to walk just a section of it.

“I’m sure the children involved in the project will enjoy finding out more about their stretch of the Cleveland Way and will hopefully return with their family and friends to tell them what they’ve learnt.”

Following the walk, the children will create artwork, poems and stories about what the Cleveland Way and North York Moors means to them which will be exhibited at The Moors National Park Centre, Danby, during National Parks Week, from 28 July to 3 August.

The project is being funded by Natural England, Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council and Scarborough Council.

The Cleveland Way National Trail runs in a horseshoe around the North York Moors National Park from the market town of Helmsley to Filey on the Yorkshire coast.

Further information on it and other national trails can be found at www.nationaltrail.co.uk
