BUDDING archaeologists made some astonishing finds in the Mulgrave area recently – including ancient pieces of pottery.
The In Search of Seton Church Project is being led by archaeologist Kevin Cale.

He said: “With the kind permission of a local landowner, a team of volunteers has been field walking to look for clues as to the location of Seton’s lost church.

“So far the artefacts discovered have provided evidence of human activity from the prehistoric, medieval and through to the Victorian age.

“The team will be using the latest science based prospecting techniques to try to pinpoint evidence of buried features connected with this lost church.”

Over the next few weeks as part of the Time Travellers project, Kevin is working with Seton School, Staithes and Oakridge School, Hinderwell, together with the Mulgrave Community Research Project (MCRP).

Anthea Ellis, director and chairman of Jet Coast Development Trust (JCDT) of which MCRP is a member, told the Gazette: “The Hinderwell Station and Old Railway Memories displays during April, attracted 39 residents, many making a visit for the first time to any of the activities.

“We were contacted by someone from Kirbymoorside, who couldn’t attend, but sent a photo from the 1920s. A local person allowed us to take a picture of the well pump from the station (which he purchased and rescued before demolition).”

The recent exhibition at Aislaby attracted over 100 people, some from as far away as Leeds.

One exciting find was a box of over 20 reels of old 16mm films of the village and several village events and residents have expressed an interest in starting a Local History Group.

Events planned include a local history exhibition at Lythe Village Hall today from 2pm to 6pm where people can bring along any old documents, photos or maps, and the Oakridge School Anniversary event on Thursday 2 July at Hinderwell Village Hall.

People are invited to bring photos or information relating to the old and new school. For more information call Liz Dowson on 07967 453613.

For activities relating to Hinderwell, email Anthea Ellis at ellis886@btinternet.com or call (01947) 840561.

The intial pilot of the project has been so successful that the group is in the process of applying for more funding to continue it. If they get the LEADER project funding it could extend MCRP -– a project arm of Jet Coast Development Trust (JCDT) for a further three years.

Awards for All funded the initial pilot of the local history project.
