UGTHORPE villagers young and old were on their hands on knees on Bank Holiday Monday to keep a local tradition alive.
The coin trail has been a firm tradition in the village of Ugthorpe for well over ten years, where every spring bank holiday Monday, villagers join the doors of the two churches – St Anne’s and Christ Church by laying a trail of coins.
This year’s trail raised a total of £246.83, and as always, the money was divided equally between the two churches.
A total of £754.30 was raised altogether on the day, from the success of a coffee morning, plant, cake and other various stalls as well as the coin trail itself.
A competition to guess how much money was laid in the trail was won by Lucy White, who’s guess was nearest to the total amount.
Maureen Jefferson who helped to organise the event along with her husband Joe who is church warden, said: “We had a large crowd, a very good turnout.
“It’s mainly the children who lay the money, and it was lovely to see such a great amount raised.
“Everyone goes around with buckets picking it all up, and then it’s taken to the church hall to be counted.”
