GOLDSBOROUGH failed to score for the first time this season in their most important league game.
A win would have given the village side the league title but second-placed Tavern's narrow victory keeps their own hopes alive.
Tavern started brighter but good defensive work by both teams restricted attempts on goal.
Both teams pushed for the breakthrough and the midfield became congested.
Several reckless challenges went unpunished by the referee.
Goldsborough came into the game in the second half and created several scoring chances.
But Tavern took the lead on 60 minutes. As the Goldsborough defence failed to clear, Breckon ran towards goal and was brought down in the box.
Breckon took the spot kick and scored comfortably to the keeper's left.
Tavern had a chance to double the lead five minutes later when Scott was brought down for another penalty, but Breckon's scuffed effort trickled wide.
Marsay had an excellent chance to level when a cross by Goodchild found him at the back post but his header from three yards went wide.
Goldsborough continued to look for the equaliser but the Tavern defence held firm to the final whistle.
Result: Goldsborough 0 Lingdale Tavern 1
