A WHITBY businessman and cricket fan has underlined the importance of sponsorship to local sport during the credit crunch.
Rob Smith, a partner in Richardson and Smith estate agent and auctioneers in Whitby, said his firm was happy to help Mulgrave Cricket Club with a sponsorship donation for a new scoreboard.

Mr Smith said he had been speaking to Glaisdale man Darren Harland – who plays for Scarborough in the Yorkshire League – who had told him even at that standard, teams are struggling financially.

Cricket runs in the family as Mr Smith’s son Theo – a pupil at Whitby Commuinity College – recently earned a call-up to the North Yorkshire under 15s team.
