A STAITHES motocross rider is hoping to raise much needed funds for Cancer Research UK at an two-day event later this month.
Russ Watson, who runs the Cleveland Garage in Whitby Road, Staithes, will be competing in the Twin Shocks Masters event at Little Silver, Yeovil, on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 May.
Mr Watson, who is sponsored by Marsh Haulage, only recently returned to the sport after a period of retirement and during his younger days, he was the first person to win his championships three years in a row.
His wife Liz said: "He retired about 16 or 17 years ago and started again last year.
"His dad bought an old bike and asked him if he wanted a go and that was it.
"We want to raise money for Cancer Research UK and have about £400 so far."
The money raised will help fund a team of 3,000 scientists and doctors.
Statistics show one in three people will develop cancer at some point in their lives – with one in four dying from the disease.
People who would like to make a donation can call Mr Watson on (01947) 840880 during office hours.
